John Train
1928-2022
John Train, co-founder and longtime Chairman of Montrose Advisors, died peacefully in his beloved Maine on August 13th, 2022.
A Renaissance man, the breadth of his knowledge and the range of his various activities were prodigious. Ever eager to learn and to teach, his wit and wisdom are sorely missed.
His powerful, common-sense investment philosophy was a guiding star not only for us but for all those who have read The Craft of Investing, The Money Masters and other investment classics.
John Train’s investment philosophy and his assessment of other investment professionals’ methods are contained in his books on investing. As Joe Queenan wrote in The American Spectator:
“There are roughly twenty-five books that should be in every investor’s library, and John Train has written two of them.
“Mind you, The Money Masters and The New Money Masters are the fruits of Train’s interviews with money managers ranging from Warren Buffet, and John Templeton to Peter Lynch and Jimmy Rogers. They are masterpieces.
“In his new book, The Craft of Investing, Train sums up everything he has learned in or around Wall Street over the years. It is as lucid and succinct an introduction to investing as any books to be found anywhere; it is elegantly written, and often quite witty.
“Writes Train: Remember, there are far more ways to lose than to win, and that what you don’t own can’t hurt you.
“Actually, not owning this book could.”
The Craft of Investing: “The best book on money management I’ve ever read and possibly the best book on money management ever written.” - Robert Clark, Worth magazine
John Train’s published books:
